I've been quite enjoying the challenge of various internet short story competitions. In particular it has been fun to try to work within the constraints (word length and theme) of the competitions but use them to deliver prequels to the events of "Lady of the Helm" and "Wrath of the Medusa."
Most successful authors seem to start with the short story before going on to the full fledged novel, but I find myself working in reverse! All the various back stories which build to the main trilogy have given me plenty of material for a variety of stand-alone short stories.
